Joey married his wife, Connie Glass Hanner, in 1983. Connie works for Alabama Power. They have 2 children; daughter Jessica and son Brandon.

Joey graduated from Ohatchee High School in 1982. He is currently attending New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in pursuit of his degree in Christian Ministry.

Joey and his family joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church in 1990. Joey has work at Mt. Zion since September 2001.
